In cooperation with DRBC, DNREC, and EPA, the University of Delaware will conduct
a sedimentological and geophysical survey of the Upper Delaware Estuary.  The purpose
of this project is to map the distribution of bottom sediment types as indicated by sonar
backscatter patterns and to determine sediment accumulation rates at select locations.  These
data will be used to evaluate historical loading of chemical constituents, as well as guide future
bottom sampling activities proposed by the cooperating agencies.  The work will be
accomplished through a combination of side-scan sonar surveying, chirp subbottom profiling,
sediment coring, followed by sediment chronological studies in the laboratory.  Specific
objectives include the following:  (1) generate a side-scan sonar backscatter map to delineate
bottom types (i.e., rock, sand, mud), (2) analyze chirp sonar profiles to determine the thickness
and lateral continuity of subbottom sedimentary strata, and (3) estimate sediment accumulation
rates based on down-cores profiles of the radionuclide Cs-137.  The results of this study will
be used to identify depositional and erosional zones, potential sink and source areas for
sedimentary contaminants in the estuary.  In addition, new geological data produced during
the course of this work will complement an ongoing study of Delaware estuarine sedimentation
lead by the Principal Investigators and sponsored by the Delaware Sea Grant program.
